Residential Trip to Shining Cliff Woods Hostel

This year, we chose to run the residential trip at the very beginning of the academic year as it offered the perfect opportunity for learners to bond, build trust, and settle into new routines. Being away together allowed learners to get to know their peers and staff in a relaxed and positive environment, helping to reduce anxieties and create strong relationships from the start. We also hoped the experience would set the tone for the year ahead by bringing to life our college values – Growth, Respect, Authenticity, Connection, and Enjoyment – through shared challenges, teamwork, and new experiences.

Before setting off, we were clear about what we hoped everyone would gain from the experience. For learners, the aim was to build independence, grow in confidence, develop friendships, and feel more comfortable working as part of a group. For colleagues, it offered a chance to see learners in a different environment, understand their strengths, and build strong relationships that would support them across learning environments.

Our residential trip to Shining Cliff Woods Hostel began with excitement, anticipation, and a sense of adventure as learners arrived ready for their overnight stay in the Derbyshire woodland. For many, staying away from home was something they rarely experience, making this a valuable chance to grow in confidence and independence.

Day One: Activities at Carsington Water

After settling in and going through the plan for the day, learners separated into two groups for different outdoor activities at Carsington Water, listening carefully to instructions, checking equipment, and preparing for the day ahead.

Group One: Cycling Around Carsington Water

The cycling group set off on the trail around the reservoir. For many, it was the first time they had ridden a bike in years. As they travelled the route, learners supported one another, kept track of their progress, and pushed themselves through the challenging parts. Completing the full loop was a huge achievement, and the group celebrated with refreshments at the café.

Group Two: A Scenic Long Walk

The second group took on a long walk around Carsington Water. Along the way, learners navigated the route, chatted with each other, and enjoyed the peaceful scenery. The walk gave them time to talk, reflect, and connect with their peers in a relaxed setting.

Evening at Shining Cliff Woods

Back at the hostel, learners had to adjust to the compost toilet, which was a new experience for many and sparked plenty of conversation and laughter!

Learners then worked with staff to prepare a pasta meal, taking turns with tasks and sitting down together to enjoy it as a group. After dinner, there was free time to chat, share interests, and have a dance to some music before learners made their own beds and settled into their rooms.

As the evening continued, the group headed out for a night walk through the woods, noticing the sounds and atmosphere of the forest at dusk. The night ended with a campfire where learners toasted s’mores and reflected on the day’s experiences.

Day Two: Breakfast, Navigation, and Campfire Cooking

The next morning started with breakfast cobs prepared by learners before everyone worked together to clean the hostel. Learners stripped their beds, tidied rooms, and helped leave the space ready for the next visitors.

The day’s main activity was an orienteering challenge in the woods. Using What3Words and Google Maps, learners navigated between checkpoints, discussed directions, and worked closely as a team. The challenge brought a real sense of problem-solving and adventure.

For lunch, learners prepared their own wraps, chose their fillings, crimped them, and warmed them over the campfire – an enjoyable and rewarding outdoor meal.

Friendships and Connections

One of the most meaningful parts of the residential was the friendships that developed. Learners who barely knew each other at the start were chatting, helping one another, and sharing genuine ‘life moments’ by the end. The shared challenges, teamwork, and time spent together created strong connections that will support learners throughout the rest of the year.

Learner Testimonials

Many learners reflected positively on the experience, with several sharing what they gained from the trip.

“The trip has really helped build my confidence. I’ve made new friends, learned to be more patient, and I think it was a really good idea to bring us all together.”

“I think it was a good idea because it brought us all together and helped us get to know each other more. It also got us involved in activities that some of us had never tried before.”

“I think it has helped me make new friends and given me the confidence to start hanging out with my friends in the community.”

“I really enjoyed spending time with staff and friends. It made me really happy, and I especially enjoyed it when we had a campfire.”

“It was good because I got to know everyone better, and I’d say having a residential was a good idea because it brought everyone closer together.”

These reflections show just how much the residential supported personal growth, confidence, friendships, and a strong sense of community for everyone involved.

Conclusion

Across the two days, learners built confidence, developed independence, strengthened communication, and supported one another through a range of new and challenging experiences. Many achieved things they hadn’t thought possible, from cycling long distances to navigating unfamiliar environments, participating in night walks and sleeping away from home.

By the end of the trip, learners returned with new skills, new friendships, and a positive foundation for the year ahead.
