My name is Miya and I am 22. I have Learning Difficulties and find reading and writing really tricky. Sometimes my self-management used to be not good. I needed a minute to calm down if I wasn’t feeling myself. I used to get a taxi or a minibus with other learners to get to school. There were lots of people getting picked up and dropped off. Transition2 and Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Psychiatry Teaching Unit have built an impactful partnership that’s transforming futures on both sides. Medical students gain real-world insights into the lives of young adults with learning disabilities and Autism – developing deeper empathy, confidence, and communication skills.
For Transition2 learners, the experience builds self-esteem, sharpens communication, and fosters a better understanding of health and wellbeing. Some even become paid Expert Patients, shaping future doctors through lived experience
