An autistic Derby 19-year-old has been flourishing in the workplace through a powerful partnership between Derby City Council’s skills and support hub Transition2 and L.E.A.D. IT Services.
Shae Ormond was excluded from school for a year but has now been given a chance to shine with a weekly work placement at leading technical organisation L.E.A.D. IT Services.
I started college shortly after COVID so I didn’t really have a transition period. I stopped going in and got kicked out of college. I didn’t go to college or do anything after that really for three years.

I started at Ecclesbourne School and then went to Horizons (Sixth Form). I then went to Transition2 for two years. I came to college for freedom! I wanted to be independent.
Transition2 and Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Psychiatry Teaching Unit have built an impactful partnership that’s transforming futures on both sides. Medical students gain real-world insights into the lives of young adults with learning disabilities and Autism – developing deeper empathy, confidence, and communication skills.
For Transition2 learners, the experience builds self-esteem, sharpens communication, and fosters a better understanding of health and wellbeing. Some even become paid Expert Patients, shaping future doctors through lived experience

Maddy is a young lady with Autism who was originally at Derby College studying Health Care when she was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). This led to many health difficulties and the College no longer being able to meet her needs.
